Exactly, which is why not having gold sinks would make this problem intolerable to the average gamer.
For example, imagine that you've played along in the game and have amassed a nice sum of 10-20K.
Now, you have a nice collector's staff, and would like to add a +5 energy staff head to it, to get the most utility out of it.
Scenario #1 - Gold sinks exist. You can spend about 3K on the staff head, add it your staff, and go merrily on your way.
Scenario #2 - Gold sinks do not exist. Inflation has gone wild. You want to buy one from someone, and they say that they'll sell it to you - for 50K. You're out of luck, and have to wait until you find one on a staff, which may take you a month or two of random drops.
...and you're saying that gold sinks and the economy only affect the uber-rich?

I don't see giving money to another player for an over-priced item as a gold sink.
I see standing on a square trying to get a meaningless title while your gold gets drained away as a gold sink.
It has to go to the game via the merchants to be a gold sink.

Take FoW armour for example:
Each set costs you roughly 1 million gold with a few variants here and there. In my GW lifetime, I have bought 7 full sets <boasts > meaning around 7 million of my gold has been 'destroyed' and never to be seen again in the economy.
Suppose I didn't buy any FoW armour sets, I'd have 7 million in the bank to play around with. That means that if I want a green item and a beginner player wants the same green item, I have money to throw about and I'll get it. The beginner doesn't stand a chance so the developers implemented gold-sinks to even out the economy and prevent massive wealth margins between the players. A beginner in GW would be like a homeless guy person in Macys - he's got no chance.

The real reason they have goldsinks is to attrack the MMO type of players to PvE in GW to sell more copies of the game.It is one of the hardest to make gold in as I heard from someone in game.It is great marketing is what it is.There really shouldn't be a enconomy in GW as it is a competive game for PvP.

The guild hall services are nice. but in reality not necessary. Our guild had enough people with a ton of extra gold to buy them all. and in our alliance we are the only one with them all. So everyone in the alliance uses our hall for the convenience. but in all reality its not that big a deal.. you can go to any town and do everything we do in GH. Its just the convenience is all. and if people have the gold and the guild is large enough its not that big a deal to dump around 600K for everything... But yea if all you are is just you, then yea.. I can see that as being a problem...
The Guild Treasurer NPC is something I have been trying to get added for a long time to allow for donations to services and upgrades to halls... That way when you got a few k to drop give it to the treasury and when there is enough it buys the service automatically... BUt again. Its not a necessity... by any means...
